With the stimulus money on the table and the Stark provision allowing hospitals/labs to cover most the expense associated with purchasing and implementing an EHR solution, there are many physicians who are being pushed into programs that may or may not work best for their practice.
Below is an excerpt from EMRandHipaa.com where John expresses concern over the HITECH act and its impact on the open source EMR movement. There will be a certification requirement and more and more and it looks as thought that will be the CCHIT certification. Some states have already independtly adopted CCHIT for their state healthcare facilities and it is just a matter of time before the government moves forward with this standardization.
ATLANTA – R. Andrew Eckert, who as CEO of the Eclipsys Corp. saw the company through a restructuring in 2006 and back to prosperity, is stepping down from the helm of the Atlanta-based company and will be replaced by a well-known industry insider.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on Dec. 30 posted a proposed–and long awaited–rule defining the “meaningful use” of electronic health records which is how physicians will qualify for the stimulus money that is part of the ARRA HITECH program. There are a lot of details in this bill and a lot still to be determined. I have identified some of the many key points found in this rule. It is a rule worth reading for those with the time and attention span. Final rule is not expected before March 2010 which means there are probably going to be many more changes before this is implemented.
