Practice Fusion | Free EMR Software

If you are a user, please rate the EMR below.

Practice Fusion is the fastest growing Electronic Health Record community in the US. Founded in 2005, we’re rapidly expanding and adding new users. Over 18,000 physicians and practice managers in 50 states currently use Practice Fusion’s Electronic Health Record.

The free EMR software is provided in exchange for advertising on the tablet, in the form of a banner ad on the side or at the bottom.  The banner ad is not overwhelming by any means but it is noticeable.  Typical advertisers will be pharmaceutical companies, CVS, wal mart, and companies from related industries.  There is the option for Practice Fusion to use the patient data(without identifying information) for clinical studies.

Practice Fusion has a billing service that can be performed in conjunction with the free software and charges 6.5% of collections which is within the range of normal for billing services.  They also now have the ability to integrate with other billing programs thus eliminating the necessity of using their billing service. Scheduling is a component of the EMR but at the time of writing this post, Practice Fusion does not have the E-prescription capability.  The screen and workflow seem very user friendly and easy to navigate.  The scheduling component is functional and will get the job done for large or small offices.

Practice Fusion announced last week that SalesForce.com has invested in their product which should continue to keep the technology and software utilized by Practice Fusion

Our group demoed the Practice Fusion product and we were pleased with some aspects and disappointed with others. I did not like the fact that the billing component was not integrated as this would cause significant logistical problems.

Overall I would say that the layout looks nice and usability seems adequate for a free product. I however would have to consider the billing problems and lack of hl7 compliance before selecting it as the emr solution for our office.

    Best,
    Kyle

The free edition of practice fusion is different than the pay for it edition. The free edition is fairly simple and easy to use. However, as for the pay for it edition I found it quite difficult to use and did not find it useful. One can type in text for the SOAP note, but it does not integrate with calculating the E&M code. In order to integrate with the E&M coding, you have to use the templates. The subjective template simply puts in the record a series of questions and answers which is not the way it is normally done. the subjective would normally go like this: 54 year male with right knee pain for 5 years. It is a dull pain that was intermittent at first but in the last 6 months had been almost all the time. His pain is made worse by bending, kneeling, squatting, and going up and down stairs. It gets better by sitting and lying down. His knee occasionally binds up and occasionally makes noise. The pain is not worse when it makes noise.
The practice fusion will make the above note like this: Duration: When did you first have knee pain? Answer: Patient reports 5 years ago. Location: Which knee do you have pain in? Answer. Patient reports right knee. Quality: What is the quality of your pain? Answer: Patient reports dull pain. Timing: When does the pain occur? Answer: Patient reports all the time. Variability: What makes the pain worse? Answer: Patient reports bending, kneeling, squatting, and going up and down stairs. What makes the pain better? Answer: Patient reports sitting and lying down. Additional signs and symptoms: Does your knee ever bind up? Answer: Patient reports yes occasionally. (occasionally goes in the side note) Does your knee ever give out on you? Answer: Patient reports yes occasionally. (occasionally goes in the side note) Does you knee ever make noise? Answer: Patient reports yes occasionally (occasionally goes in the side note) Does the knee hurt you when it makes noise? Answer: Patient reports no.
Then in the Objection section under the different titles and subtitles you choose one – like cardiovascular. Then you click on the phrase inside box below and it states something like this: S1, S2 normal there are no gallops, rubs, murmurs. No if this phrase is not correct you correct it by typing in a note at the end which state there is a grade 1/6 murmur at LSB. So what you do is first state that there are no murmurs and then you contradict yourself by stating at the end that there is a murmur.
On the practice fusion website it states:
    Just voted #1 EMR system
    in customer satisfaction!

I WONDER WHO VOTED? Probably those who never used the EMR
